5 Smart Summer Tips for Seniors

Summer for most people is a period of joy and rest. However for seniors, the temperatures and sun can be hazardous if the appropriate provisions aren’t taken. Here are some good tips that seniors, along with their caregivers, can utilize to ensure they have an enjoyable summer.

  1. Stay Hydrated
Seniors are more prone to dehydration than younger people because they are unable to conserve as much water as they age. Likewise, they may be less conscious of their need for liquids and have trouble acclimating to the heat. Please drink water often, and be sure to pack some for those long summer trips.
  2. Keep in Touch
High temperatures can be serious, so communication is a vital part in the care of seniors. Tell friends and family if you’ll be outside for an extended period of time.
  3. Wear the Correct Gear
All people, including seniors, should wear the correct clothing for the weather conditions. When it’s hot out, natural fabrics (such as cotton) are cooler than synthetic fibers. Fill your summer closet with light-colored and loose-fitting clothing to help feel cooler and more comfortable.
  4. Rub on Sunblock and Wear Hats
Young and old should wear sunblock when outside. Particularly seniors require the added sun shield to help keep them well. Caregivers, family and friends can assist by softly prompting loved ones about applying sunblock and aiding them when needed. Hats are also a great idea, specifically for those with light colored hair and those with no hair.
  5. Smart Workouts
It is key to keep track of time. Don’t stay outside for an extended period and drink even more water than usual. Likewise consider working out earlier in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is not at its highest.

These are just a few tips to help you have a great summer – no matter how old you are!
