How Can I Afford Hospice Care?

When its time for your loved one to begin transitioning into a hospice care environment, it can be hard to imagine paying for all of the costs.

Hospice care is a wonderful option to receive assistance in providing rest and necessary services for your loved one’s last moments of life. But all that help does come at a cost. So, how can you afford hospice care for your family member?

As it turns out, there are many different solutions to be able to financially support hospice care and all of its amenities.  Hospice care is covered at little or no cast for most hospice patients by Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance. Some veterans who have served in the United States military may be eligible for financial support through the Veteran’s Health Administration.

If your loved one does not have major medical insurance, is not a veteran, or was not accepted for coverage through Medicaid, there are still other options. Fortunately, a majority of hospice care facilities in the United States cooperate with Medicare to provide services through the Medicare Hospice Benefit. This program typically requires the following qualifications:

  • The patient has been recently diagnosed with a terminal illness
  • The patient is at the age of 65 years or older
  • The patient’s current medical physician along with their local hospice medical director can certify to confirm that the patient has a projected life expectancy of six months or less

The expenses that are covered by these insurances can include prescription medications, nurse attendance, medical supplies and equipment, counseling, spiritual advisement, and inpatient residential care. These are valuable services that can make all the difference for your loved one’s final days with you. But there are those who may be medically edible and do not have insurance or the resources to pay for this treatment. If this is your situation, don’t let financial needs stop you from reaching out. If you have questions regarding the costs, coverage, or potential self-payments, please don’t hesitate to ask!

We always have someone on staff available to help explain coverage provisions and additional options.
